The 2014 Northwest Recess Massive: The Event!
For 2014 (and 2014 only!) we are combining two of our favorite Recess events into one: the Northwest Massive is born! It will be an event where the magical setting of Northwest's Lookout Arts Quarry will meet the magnitude, budget, competitions, workshops, and scope of the Recess Massive. The Lookout Arts Quarry plays our host: a magical setting of an 86 acre rock quarry turned circus community south of Bellingham, WA. The days will be filled with swimming and cliff-jumping in the flooded quarry pits, dance and non-dance workshops galore, and hiking in the thousands of acres of surrounding national forest! The nights will be filled with dancing in the circus warehouse, the Recess Bus, as well as the legendary floating dance floor that Recess custom built three years ago. Not to mention the exciting new art installations and venue builds we have planned for this year! This, all alongside the usual hallmarks of Recess: boundary-pushing Alt, Fusion, and Blues music bumping until well past sunrise, mind-blowing skill-share workshops running in the daytime, inspiring gender-fluid and Alt competitions (with prizes!), and a radically inclusive ethic that can't help but inspire.
The Pre Party
While the event officially only runs from Thursday until Monday, we are hosting workshops and dances for the three days leading up to the event. Make it an extended-weekend Massive, or a week-long Massive! Check out the Pre Party schedule plans here.
All Recess events are need blind--we are committed to making sure no one is excluded from our community due to finances. If you want to come, but feel held back by your financial situation, fill out a scholarship and volunteer application so that we can find a way for you to join us. You will find them at the bottom of the registration page.
The Co-Production Ethic of Recess: Plugging In
Recess events are not run by some big production company: the events are co-produced by every single one of their participants. Everyone who registers for this year's Recess Massive will be required to sign up for at least one "plug-in" shift to help make the event happen and everyone is encouraged to sign up for more. This year everyone will sign up for a plug-in shift when they arrive at the event at the Registration/Welcome Home Desk.
